The most crucial factor that affects the workability of concrete is its water content. If the water content is high in concrete, then the workability of the concrete will also be high. Cement plays the role of cement binder in construction material. It can be explained in terms of cement-water ratio means if the cement-water ratio is small, then there will be more cement, and workability will be less. But on the other hand, if the cement-water ratio is high, then there will be less problem of workability but, still, there are some errors that can be faced, for example leaking of the material.
If the desired thickness of the concrete cannot be achieved, then the workability of the concrete will be affected in a negative way. So, it is crucial to keep the fixed ratio of the material that will be used for the preparation of concrete. The size of the aggregates to be used for the preparation of concrete are also very important because if the size of the aggregates is small then there will be less surface area for the water, and the workability of the concrete will be less. Still, on the other hand, if the size of the aggregates of concrete will be of fine size, then the surface area for water is optimum for the working of concrete.
There are some concrete admixtures available in the market for improving the workability of concrete. Different admixtures have different functions in the concrete; for example, there are some admixtures that are added intentionally to increase the workability of the concrete and there are some admixtures that increase the workability as a side effect of their main purpose. Other than concrete admixtures there are some supplementary materials for example fly ash, which are added to the fresh concrete to increase its workability.
